Mars Sign Calculator: What Is My Mars Sign?

Your Mars sign is the zodiac sign Mars was in when you were born, and it describes how you go after what you want. Enter your birthday and birthplace and this calculator gives the sign with a one-line reading on this page. Mars can sit in any sign regardless of your birthday month, so you cannot guess it from your Sun sign.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the date. Year matters as much as the day here, because Mars takes about two years to come back to the same sign. Check the year before moving on.
  2. Find your town. Start typing and tap your birthplace in the list. It sets the local calendar day, which counts only when Mars moved into a new sign around your birth.
  3. Read your Mars. A single sign is your answer. Two signs mean Mars moved that day, so ask a relative roughly what hour you were born and enter it.

Your Mars sign is the sign Mars occupied at your birth. Mars usually spends six or seven weeks in a sign, but it can stay for months when it turns retrograde. Your birth date settles the answer on about 98 of every 100 dates.

What Mars describes

Mars is your drive. It describes how you chase a goal, how you stand up for yourself, and what you do with your energy. Courage and the urge to act now belong here, and so does competitiveness. Astrologers do not treat it as good or bad. The same force can build something or start a fight, and the growth lies in turning anger and impatience into action that helps.

So the question your Mars sign answers is less "who am I" than "what do I do when something is in my way".

Your Mars sign can be anywhere

Mars is not tied to the Sun the way Mercury and Venus are. It can sit in any of the twelve signs whatever your birthday, including the sign opposite your Sun. These birthdays were run through the calculator, using New York as the birthplace:

12 June 1979GeminiTaurus
3 November 1985ScorpioLibra
30 August 1988VirgoAries
15 May 1994TaurusAries
5 October 2010LibraScorpio

Notice 1988: a careful, detail-minded Virgo Sun with a Mars that acts first and asks later. This is what makes the placement worth checking. It often explains why a person does not behave the way their Sun sign reading says they should.

How long Mars stays in one sign

Between 1960 and 2030 the typical stay was about six and a half weeks, but the range is wide. Mars turns retrograde about every two years, meaning it appears to move backward for a while, and that stretches its visit. The longest stretch in those years began on 11 November 2011, when Mars stayed in Virgo until 3 July 2012, almost eight months.

Here is one stretch of time, with dates in UTC. Mars entered Gemini, went back to Taurus, then returned to Gemini, so birthdays in October 1990 and February 1991 share Mars in Gemini, while Christmas 1990 between them has Mars in Taurus.

Since it moves slowly compared with the Moon, your Mars sign is shared by everyone born in the same few weeks or months. The house it falls in, which needs a birth time, is the part that is more your own.

When the calculator shows two signs

On about 2 of every 100 dates Mars crossed into a new sign. 14 February 2001 is one: it moved from Scorpio to Sagittarius at 20:05 UTC. A birth that morning in New York was Mars in Scorpio, and one late that night in London was already past the change. For a date like this the card lists both signs, and any birth time you can find settles it. "Early morning" or "just before dinner" is often enough to choose.

Mars through the signs

Your result comes with one line. Here is the wider picture, in the order of the zodiac:

Mars inHow the drive tends to work
AriesFast and direct, dislikes limits and slow plans
TaurusPatient and practical, keeps going toward security
GeminiRuns on ideas and talk, needs to focus on fewer projects
CancerFollows mood, protective, pushes back when cornered
LeoCandid and fearless, puts pride into its actions
VirgoWorks by method, particular about standards
LibraWeighs the options first, decisiveness is the practice
ScorpioFocused and forceful, does not quit
SagittariusFrank and enthusiastic, hates being fenced in
CapricornRealistic and self-reliant, puts in years toward a goal
AquariusArgues from an unusual angle, acts on its own terms
PiscesQuiet and indirect, reads the room and waits

Mars rules Aries and, in the traditional scheme, Scorpio as well; Capricorn is the sign of its exaltation, an old term for a position where a planet works well. These labels describe style. They do not mean some people got a better Mars than others. Mars in Pisces has less obvious fire than Mars in Aries, and the strength is still there, kept below the surface.

Testing your result against real life

Think of the last time something blocked your way, then ask:

  • Did you push straight through, make a plan, talk it out, or wait for the right moment?
  • What does impatience look like on you: a sharp word, silence, or suddenly doing the job yourself?
  • Which part of the reading sounds like you when you are at your best, and which when you are tired?

If the answer does not fit, read your Mars next to your zodiac sign and your rising sign. Another strong placement can soften or sharpen how Mars shows. With a time of birth, your full chart adds the house, which names the part of daily life where this drive shows up most, and marks Mars if it was retrograde. The how we calculate page explains how the positions are found.

Common questions

How do I find my Mars sign?

Your birthday and birthplace go in the form above. The sign Mars was in appears below the form with a short reading. There is no table to search and no time zone to work out, and the time box can be left empty on most dates.

What does my Mars sign tell me?

It describes how you act on what you want: how quickly you move, how you handle a block in the road, and how you respond when pushed. It says nothing about whether you will succeed, and it is only one part of your chart.

Do I need my birth time for my Mars sign?

Rarely. About 2 of every 100 dates are days when Mars changed signs, and only those need an hour. A birth time is also needed for the house, which your full chart adds next to the sign.

What house is my Mars in?

Houses are counted from your rising sign, so this takes a birth time and place. Enter both and open your chart, where the house sits beside Mars in the list of positions. Without a time you still get the sign, just not the house.

How long does Mars stay in a sign?

Usually six or seven weeks. When Mars turns retrograde, which happens about every two years, the stay can last for months. Mars stayed in Virgo from November 2011 until July 2012, so everyone born in those months shares it.

Why is my Mars sign so different from my Sun sign?

Because the two move independently. Mercury and Venus stay close to the Sun, but Mars does not, so it can be in any sign, even the opposite one. That is common, and it often explains why a Sun sign description feels only half right.

Is a Mars sign about anger?

Partly. Anger is one thing Mars energy can turn into, but courage, ambition, sport and the plain urge to get moving belong to it too. The reading shows your general style of acting, which also appears when you are not annoyed at all.

What does Mars in Scorpio mean?

It is a hard-working, forceful placement that meets a challenge with concentrated energy and does not give up easily. Astrologers also warn about a cold edge toward other people's feelings, so the advice is to point that force at the task.
