Moon Sign Calculator: What Is My Moon Sign?
Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was travelling through when you were born. Put in your birth date and place and the calculator shows it, with a short reading of what it says about your feelings and habits. It works without a birth time, and if the Moon changed signs that day you see both.
How to use it
- Enter your birthday. Type the month, day and year. The form jumps to the next box as you fill each one, and a numeric keypad opens on a phone.
- Add the birthplace and time if known. Pick the town from the list. If you do not know the hour, tick the box that says so; the Moon sign still works.
- Read your Moon sign. The sign appears under the form with a short reading. If the Moon changed signs on your birthday, both signs are listed in the order they came, earliest first.
Your moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at your birth. The Moon stays in each sign for about two and a quarter days, so your birth date alone usually gives the answer. On the days it changes sign, a birth time is needed to say which of the two is yours.
What the Moon says in a birth chart
In astrology the Moon describes your emotional life: how you feel, what makes you feel safe, and the habits and moods you slip into without thinking. Because it is the fastest-moving body in the chart, it also shows how you react and adapt to the people around you. The sign it sits in colours that style. Looking after your Moon, in the astrologer's sense, simply means knowing what you need in order to feel settled.
People often say their Moon sign explains the way they behave at home, when they are tired, or when something goes wrong, while their Sun sign is the face they show on a good day. Treat that as a way of looking at yourself rather than a rule.
Why a date is usually enough
The Moon goes all the way round the zodiac in about 27 days, so it spends only about two and a quarter days in each sign. That is far faster than the Sun, which takes a month. The surprise is how often a birth date falls on a changeover. Take May 1994: the Moon changed signs on 14 of the 31 days, which is almost every other day.
On those days the date is not enough, and a good calculator should say so rather than guess. Here, a day without a change shows one sign. A day with a change shows two, for example Cancer then Leo for 16 May 1994 in New York. The first sign is where the Moon was after midnight, and the second is where it moved later the same day.
Two birthdays, side by side
Take Priya, whose birthday is 15 May 1994 in New York. The Moon stayed in Cancer for that whole date, so her answer is Cancer and nothing else. Elena's birthday is 16 May 1994 in the same city, the day the Moon moved from Cancer into Leo. Her result shows both signs until she adds her birth time. Two people born a day apart, and one of them can be given the answer immediately while the other needs one more detail.
How to settle a two-sign day
If your birthday is one of those days, the birth time decides. Add it to the form and the calculator gives you a single sign. If you do not have the time, try these in order:
- Ask a relative whether you were born in the morning, afternoon or night. Even that narrows the day.
- Read both signs. One of them usually sounds more like you when you are relaxed and by yourself, not when you are with other people.
- Come back if you find the time later, and add it to get a single sign.
Do not pick the sign you would prefer. Until you have the hour, both signs remain possible.
Birthplace and the calendar day
The Moon changes sign at a precise moment, and the same moment falls on different calendar dates in different parts of the world. Someone born at 9 pm on 15 May in New York was born on 16 May in London. The calculator uses the local date and time of the birthplace together with its time zone, so enter your birthday exactly as it appears on your birth record and let it do the conversion.
Reading your result well
Start with the one-line meaning under your sign, then test it against moments when you are tired, hurt or very pleased. Those are the situations the Moon covers. If a line fits only part of you, that is normal: a sign describes a style, and your Sun and Rising signs add other parts. A good habit is to write down two or three sentences about how you recover after a hard day, then compare them with the sign.
Moon sign next to Sun and Rising
Astrologers read three signs first. Your Sun sign sets the core, your Moon sign sets your inner weather, and your rising sign decides what strangers notice. Each tells a different part of the story, and they often differ. A person with a lively Sun sign and a quiet Moon sign is not contradicting themselves; they are showing two different things.
If you want all three, use the Big 3 guide or run the rising sign calculator. If your reading mentions a Moon sign you did not expect, check the date, the place and the AM or PM before you decide the result is wrong.
What the full chart adds
With a birth time, the full chart also gives your Moon a degree and a house. The house is the area of life where the Moon's themes tend to show up. Without a birth time you still see the Moon's sign, but the houses are left out because they depend on the hour. How we calculate describes how the Moon's position is found and tested.
Common questions
How do I find my moon sign?
Type your birthday and the town into the form above, and the sign the Moon was in on that day comes up with a short reading. A birth time is optional, but it is required on days when the Moon moved between two signs.
Can I find my moon sign without my birth time?
Yes, in most cases. The Moon stays in a sign for about two and a quarter days, so many birthdays give a single answer. If the Moon changed sign on your birthday, you see both signs and need the hour to pick one.
Why does the calculator show two moon signs?
It means the Moon crossed from one sign into the next during your birth date. Both are listed in the order they happened. Only your birth time can show which one was in place when you arrived.
How long does the Moon stay in one sign?
About two and a quarter days. The Moon circles the whole zodiac in around 27 days, so it passes through all twelve signs every month. That is why moon sign changes are so frequent compared with the Sun sign.
Is my moon sign more important than my sun sign?
Neither outranks the other. Astrologers read the Sun as your core character and the Moon as your emotional needs and habits. Many people feel the Moon describes them better in private, but a chart is meant to be read as a whole.
Does my birthplace change my moon sign?
Rarely, but it can. The Moon sign depends on the exact moment of birth, and the calendar date of that moment is different in different time zones. The calculator applies the time zone of your birthplace so the date is read correctly.
What does my moon sign mean?
It points to how you feel, what makes you feel safe and the moods you fall into without thinking. The short reading under your result describes your sign, and the full chart adds the house where your Moon sits.
