What are the Sun, Moon and Rising signs?
They are the three parts of a birth chart people read first, often called the Big 3. Your Sun sign is the one you already know from your birthday. Your Moon and Rising signs depend on where the Moon was and which sign was on the eastern horizon when you were born.

Reading your Big 3 together
Each of the three answers a different question. Your Sun sign is what you are working toward. Your Moon sign is what you need to feel steady. Your Rising sign is the manner other people meet first, often before they know anything else about you.
That is why two people with the same Sun sign can seem so different. An Aries Sun with a Cancer Moon wants to charge ahead, then needs to come home and feel looked after. An Aries Sun with a Capricorn Moon wants to charge ahead with a plan and may not tell anyone how it feels. Add a Libra Rising and strangers may meet someone polite and easygoing long before they see the drive underneath.
Why your Sun sign can differ from a date table
The dates printed in magazines are averages. The Sun moves into each sign at a slightly different moment every year, so someone born on the first or last day of a sign can land on either side of the line. This calculator uses the exact moment and place of your birth, so it tells you which side you are on.
No birth time? You still get most of it
Your Rising sign is the only one of the three that needs a birth time, because it changes about every two hours. Tick “I don’t know my birth time” and you still get your Sun sign, your Moon sign and every planet. If the Moon changed signs that day, you see both. For your Rising sign, you get a table showing which sign goes with each time of day, which often helps if you know roughly when you were born.

What if I don't know my birth time?
Tick “I don't know my birth time”. You still get your Sun and Moon signs. Your Rising sign needs a time, so we show which sign goes with each time of day.
Why does my birth place matter?
Your Rising sign depends on the horizon where you were born, so two people born at the same moment in different cities can have different Rising signs. Your place also sets the time zone and daylight saving.
Why is my Sun sign different from the one in a magazine?
Magazine dates are averages. The Sun changes signs at a slightly different moment each year, so if you were born near the edge of a sign you can land on either side. We use your exact birth moment.
Does being a few minutes off matter?
Usually not. The Rising sign takes about two hours to pass through a sign, so a few minutes only matter when it is close to the edge. We tell you when it is.
Is it free?
Yes. Your Big 3, your full chart and the short meanings are free, with no account needed. The only paid item is a long written report, if you want one.
Do I need to sign up?
No. Your details stay in this browser. If you want your chart on another device, you can save it with Google or your email.
What happens to my birth details?
Your chart is worked out in your browser, so your details are not sent to us unless you are signed in, which saves the chart to your account, or you buy a report. You can delete a saved chart at any time.
