Stellium

Stellium Calculator: Do I Have a Stellium?

A stellium is a group of three or more planets in the same zodiac sign or the same house of your birth chart. Enter your birth date, time and place, and this calculator checks all ten planets, names any sign or house that holds three or more, and tells you what that sign or house is about. It is free and the answer shows on this page.

How to use it

  1. Enter your birth date. The planets' signs come from the date, so the date alone already checks for a sign stellium. Use the date on your birth record.
  2. Add the time if you have it. Houses depend on the exact time and place, so a house stellium can only be checked with a birth time. Tick the no-time box if you do not know it.
  3. Read the result card. The card names each stellium, lists the planets in it and gives a line on that sign or house. If none is found, it says so.

You have a stellium if three or more of the ten planets, from the Sun to Pluto, sit in one sign or one house. Some astrologers ask for four. The calculator above uses three and marks groups of four or more as a strong stellium.

What a stellium is

A stellium is a cluster: three or more planets gathered in one sign or one house of the birth chart. Astrologers read it as a strong focus. Whatever that sign or house stands for gets a lot of your attention and energy, because several parts of you are working in the same place at once.

The word comes from the Latin for star, and you will also see it called a satellitium in older books. It is not a planet or a point of its own. It is a pattern you find by counting.

That is the same thing. Enter your details above and the card shows each group it finds.

What this calculator counts

It counts the ten planets: the Sun and Moon, the inner planets Mercury, Venus and Mars, and the outer ones from Jupiter out to Pluto. It leaves out the North Node, Chiron, Lilith and the angles, such as the Ascendant, because they are points rather than planets and most astrologers do not count them.

It uses three as the minimum. Some astrologers only call it a stellium at four, or ask that the planets also sit close together in degrees. If you follow one of those rules, read the planet count on the card: groups of four or more are marked as a strong stellium.

Sign stellium and house stellium

A sign stellium means three or more planets in the same zodiac sign. It colours your style: a Taurus stellium leans toward patience and comfort, an Aquarius one toward ideas and independence. Your birth date is enough for this check.

A house stellium means three or more planets in the same house. Each house stands for an area of life, and the focus lands there, such as work, home, friends or partners. Houses come from the exact time and place, so this check needs a birth time.

You can have one of each, or several. On 5 May 2000 at 9:00 in New York, the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn were all in Taurus and all in the 11th house, so that chart has a Taurus stellium and an 11th house stellium made of the same five planets. On 4 February 1962, seven planets were in Aquarius at once.

Why the Sun, Mercury and Venus often travel together

Mercury never gets far from the Sun, and Venus stays close to it too. So when you count the Sun, there is a fair chance Mercury and Venus are in the same sign or a neighbouring one. That is why many stelliums include those three. Slow planets such as Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in a sign for years, so a stellium made mostly of them is shared by many people born around the same time. The house it falls in, and any fast planets in it, make it personal.

What your result shows

For each stellium the card shows:

  • the sign or the house, with the planets in it
  • how many planets there are, and whether that makes it a strong stellium
  • one line on what that sign or house is about

If you were born without a known time and a planet changed sign that day, the card says which group it might join. Most often this is the Moon, which changes sign every two to three days.

Tips for a reliable answer

  • Check the year before you press the button. The slow planets change sign only every few years.
  • Use the local birth time, not the time where you live now.
  • If you do not know your time, read only the sign result. House stelliums need the time.
  • If the result says "possibly one", a birth time would settle it.
  • Compare with your birth chart if you want to see the planets on the wheel.

Stellium or spread-out chart

Having no stellium is not a gap in the chart. It means your planets are spread over several signs and houses, so no single area takes over. Many people have no stellium at all. Read the rest of your chart in the usual way: start with your Big 3, then the Moon sign and the rising sign.

Reading a stellium

Start with the sign or house the planets share. Then look at which planets are in it. A stellium with the Sun or Moon in it tends to feel central to who you are. One with Mars adds drive, one with Venus adds a focus on people and pleasure, and one with Saturn adds a sense of duty. The how we calculate page explains the positions and houses behind the result.

Common questions

How do I know if I have a stellium?

Enter your birth date, time and place above. The calculator counts the ten planets and shows any sign or house that holds three or more. If no group reaches three, the card says you have no stellium.

How many planets make a stellium?

Three is the most common rule, and it is the one this calculator uses. Some astrologers ask for four, or for the planets to sit close together in degrees. The card shows the planet count, so you can apply either rule.

Does a stellium check need a birth time?

Not for a sign stellium. The planets' signs come from the date, so the date is enough. A house stellium needs the time and place, because houses depend on them.

What house is my stellium in?

Add your birth time and place and the card names the house. A house stellium shows the part of life where several planets meet, such as the 10th house for career or the 7th for partners.

Do the North Node, Chiron or the Ascendant count?

Not here. The calculator counts only the ten planets from the Sun to Pluto. Points such as the nodes, Chiron, Lilith and the Ascendant are left out, as most astrologers do.

Can I have more than one stellium?

Yes. A chart can have two sign stelliums, a sign and a house stellium, or several of each. The card lists every group it finds, with the planets in it.

Is a stellium rare?

It is not unusual. Mercury and Venus never stray far from the Sun, and the slow planets share signs for years, so groups of three form often. Charts without one are common too, and nothing is missing from them.

Is the stellium calculator free?

Yes. It works on this page with no sign-up, and the result appears straight away. You can then open your full chart for free as well.
