Midheaven Calculator: What Is My Midheaven Sign?
Your Midheaven, or MC, is the zodiac sign at the highest point of the sky above your birthplace at the moment you were born. With your birth date, time and place the calculator shows your Midheaven sign and its degree, plus a short meaning. You need a birth time for this one. It is free, and there is nothing to sign up for.
How to use it
- Enter the birth time carefully. The Midheaven changes sign about every two hours, so use the time from your birth record and check AM or PM before you go on.
- Choose the birthplace. Pick the town from the list. The Midheaven mostly follows how far east or west you were born, so the right town still matters.
- Read your MC. The card shows your Midheaven sign with its degree and a short meaning. Open the full chart to see which planets sit near it.
Your Midheaven is the zodiac sign at the very top of the sky at your birth moment, opposite the IC. It needs your birth time and birthplace, and it turns through all twelve signs in a day, about two hours for each.
What the Midheaven marks
The Midheaven, often written MC from the Latin medium coeli, is the highest point of your chart: the part of the zodiac at its peak overhead at the moment you were born, opposite the IC. It points to your public side: the goals you aim at, your reputation and the way the wider world sees you. Astrologers use it to think about career direction and about what you want to be known for.
That second phrase matters. A Midheaven is not a job title, and it does not assume that you work in a conventional job. Students, caregivers, artists, people between jobs and retired people all have one, and in each case it describes the kind of recognition and contribution that feels like theirs.
Midheaven, tenth house and the IC
In the commonly used Placidus system, the Midheaven is the start of the tenth house, the house of career, public reputation and what you work toward. Its opposite, the IC or Imum Coeli, is the lowest point of the chart. It stands for your roots: home, family background and the private base you come from. The two together run from your public life at the top to your private foundation at the bottom, and the Ascendant and Descendant cross them on the horizon.
Why this one needs a birth time
The Midheaven follows the turning of the sky, so it moves through all twelve signs in a day. Here is how it ran in New York on 15 May 1994, worked out to the nearest ten minutes:
| Clock time (New York) | Midheaven sign from then |
|---|---|
| 12:00 am | Scorpio |
| 1:20 am | Sagittarius |
| 3:30 am | Capricorn |
| 5:40 am | Aquarius |
| 7:40 am | Pisces |
| 9:30 am | Aries |
| 11:20 am | Taurus |
| 1:20 pm | Gemini |
| 3:30 pm | Cancer |
| 5:40 pm | Leo |
| 7:40 pm | Virgo |
| 9:30 pm | Libra |
| 11:20 pm | Scorpio |
The signs last between about an hour and fifty minutes and two hours and ten minutes each, so a time that is an hour out will often put you in the neighbouring sign. Without any birth time, the Midheaven cannot be narrowed to one sign, which is why this calculator asks for it instead of guessing. If you only know roughly when you were born, your Moon sign and Sun sign are still available.
The Midheaven does not care about latitude
Your Rising sign shifts with latitude, meaning how far north or south of the equator you were born. The Midheaven does not. It depends on the time and on your longitude, meaning how far east or west you are. Maya, born at 2:30 pm on 15 May 1994 in New York, is a good test. Move her to a point on the same meridian at latitude 64 degrees north, and her Ascendant shifts from about 19 degrees of Virgo to about 22 degrees of Virgo, but her Midheaven stays at about 18 degrees of Gemini.
That makes the Midheaven the steadier of the two angles. It is the reason the sign usually survives small mistakes in the birthplace better than the Rising sign does, though not mistakes in the clock time.
How sure can you be of the sign?
A degree of Midheaven passes in roughly four minutes. The calculator's warning about a result close to a sign border covers the Rising sign only, so for the Midheaven, check the degree yourself. If it is below 1 degree or above 29 degrees, the neighbouring sign is a real possibility whenever your birth time is rounded or remembered. In the middle of a sign, an error of ten or fifteen minutes will not change the answer.
How to use your result
Do not read the sign as a recommendation for an occupation. Ask a different question: when other people look at what you have done, what do you want them to see? The sign gives a flavour for that. Then read the Sun and Moon next to it. A Midheaven in a quick, talkative sign beside a Moon that wants quiet can feel like a pull between two settings, and noticing that is more useful than choosing a side.
With a full chart you also see which planets sit near the Midheaven, since a planet close to this point tends to be prominent in how you are seen. The full chart lists them. Your rising sign uses the same birth time, so you can get both in one go. The checks behind the angles are on the how we calculate page.
Common questions
How do I find my Midheaven sign?
Give the calculator above your birthday, the time you were born and the town, and it returns the sign at the top of your chart with its degree. A birth time is required, because the Midheaven moves through a sign about every two hours.
How is the Midheaven calculated?
It is the point where the ecliptic crosses your local meridian, the line running overhead from north to south. The calculation uses the exact moment of birth in universal time, plus the longitude of your birthplace.
How do I find my MC without a birth time?
You cannot find a single MC sign without a time, because it passes through all twelve signs in a day. Your Sun and Moon signs are still available, and the Rising sign page shows how to narrow down the Ascendant.
Is the Midheaven the same as the tenth house?
In Placidus houses, the Midheaven is the start of the tenth house, which covers career and public reputation. In Whole Sign houses the tenth house is the tenth sign counted from the Rising sign, so the Midheaven can fall in a neighbouring house.
Does the Midheaven tell me what job I should do?
No. It describes the goals you aim at, your reputation and the way the wider world sees you. Astrologers use it to think about direction and what you want to be known for, not to choose a job title.
What is the difference between Midheaven and Ascendant?
The Ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon and describes first impressions. The Midheaven is the sign at the highest point and describes your public goals and reputation. They are separate points of the chart.
Does the Midheaven depend on where I was born?
Only on how far east or west, which is your longitude. Unlike the Rising sign it does not change with latitude, so two places at the same longitude and time share a Midheaven.
