Venus Sign

Venus Sign Calculator: What Is My Venus Sign?

Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus was in on the day you were born. Give it your birthday and birthplace and it shows the sign with a one-line meaning of what you are drawn to and how you show affection. Most birthdays need no birth time, and the answer appears on this page.

How to use it

  1. Put in your birthday. Month, day and year are enough for Venus on most dates. The boxes move on by themselves once each one is full.
  2. Choose your birthplace. Pick the town from the list so the calendar date is read in the right time zone. Skip the hour if you do not know it.
  3. Check the Venus card. One sign means Venus stayed put that day. Two signs mean it crossed a border on your birthday, and a birth time would settle which is yours.

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus occupied at your birth. Venus stays close to the Sun, so it is always your Sun sign or within two signs of it. Your birth date normally gives the answer, and the hour matters only on the rare day Venus changes sign.

What Venus stands for in a chart

Venus shows what you find beautiful and who you are drawn to. It covers affection, taste, comfort and the way you try to create harmony with other people. When it works well you are warm and easy to be around. When it is overdone it can slide into wanting comfort and approval above all else. The sign it sits in sets the style: what you notice, what feels like a treat, and how you tend to show you care.

Venus is not only about romance. It is just as relevant to friendships, to the rooms you like to spend time in, and to the way you choose a gift. Nothing in a Venus sign assumes that you are in a relationship or want to be.

Why your Venus sign sits near your Sun sign

Venus orbits inside the Earth's orbit, so from our viewpoint it never wanders far from the Sun. The widest the two ever appear apart is about 47 degrees, which is less than two signs. As a result your Venus sign is always one of five: the same sign as your Sun, one or two signs before it, or one or two signs after it.

Two real birthdays show how this works. For a Taurus Sun born on 15 May 1994, the calculator gives Venus in Gemini, one sign ahead. For a birthday on 21 December 1994, the Sun is on the Sagittarius and Capricorn border while Venus is in Scorpio, one sign before Sagittarius and two before Capricorn. If your result falls outside that five-sign window, check the date.

Does Venus need a birth time?

Seldom. Venus normally spends a few weeks in a sign, and longer in the sign where it turns retrograde, so most birth dates fall on a day when it does not change signs. Only a minority of birthdays fall on a day when Venus changes sign. When yours does the calculator shows both signs in order, and a birth time would settle it. You can ask a relative whether it was morning, afternoon or night, which is often enough to choose.

How to use the one-line result

Treat the sentence under your Venus sign as a starting point and test it against ordinary choices:

  • What kind of attention makes you feel appreciated: a handwritten note, a shared meal, practical help, time alone together?
  • Which room, colour or fabric makes you relax as soon as you walk in?
  • How do you try to smooth things over after an argument, and what do you need when someone else does it?

If the sign sounds too gentle or too bold for you, look at your Sun and Moon signs as well. Venus is one voice in a chart, and the three together usually sketch you better than any one alone.

A quick check on your own result

You can test the answer without a calculator. Take your Sun sign and count two signs back and two forward, in zodiac order. For a Leo Sun that window is Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Libra, so a Venus in Aries or Scorpio would mean something was entered wrongly. The window is a sanity check only. It cannot tell you which of the five signs is yours, which is why the date is still needed.

If Venus is marked retrograde

On your full chart, when you give a birth time, a planet that appeared to move backward at birth is labelled retrograde. Venus does this for about six weeks roughly every nineteen months, and it happens to a good many people, so it is an ordinary feature, not a flaw. Your Venus sign stays whatever the calculator showed, and the label simply adds that the planet was in that phase.

Venus and the Moon are different questions

People often swap these two. The Moon is about what you need in order to feel safe, and Venus is about what you enjoy and who you are drawn to. Someone can need quiet evenings from their Moon and still love bright, crowded places because of her Venus. The reading under your Moon sign is the place to look for comfort habits; the Venus reading is for taste and affection. Run the Moon sign calculator if you want both side by side.

Venus in the house

With a full birth time, your chart also gives Venus a house, which shows the part of life where its themes play out: for example, the fifth house is about play and romance, the second about what you value and earn, and the eleventh about friends and groups. Without the time you still get the sign. Open your full chart to see the house, or visit how we calculate for the way Venus is positioned and tested.

Common questions

How can I calculate my Venus sign?

Use the form above with your birthday and town, and the sign Venus was in on that date appears with a one-line reading. There is no ephemeris to look up and no time zone to convert.

Where is my Venus sign in my chart?

It is one of the planets in the position list on your chart page, listed after Mercury. The wheel also shows it as a small Venus symbol at its degree inside the sign.

What house is my Venus sign in?

That needs your birth time, because houses depend on the Ascendant. Add your time and place in the full chart and the position list shows the house next to Venus. Without a time you still see the sign.

Can my Venus sign be different from my Sun sign?

Yes, and it often is. Venus travels near the Sun but not with it, so it can be in the same sign or up to two signs away on either side. That gives five possible Venus signs for any Sun sign.

Why does the calculator show two Venus signs?

Venus moved into a new sign during your birth date. The two signs appear in the order Venus moved through them. Add your birth time to learn which one applied at the moment you were born.

Does Venus rule only romance?

No. The Venus sign covers affection, taste, comfort and how you create harmony with people in general, including friends and family. It says nothing about whether you are or should be in a relationship.

Is my Venus sign the same as my love language?

Not exactly. Venus describes what you are drawn to and how you show affection, which can overlap with a love language, but the two ideas come from different sources and neither one replaces the other.
