North Node

North Node Calculator: Where Is My North Node?

Your North Node is the point in the zodiac where the Moon's path crossed the Sun's path, heading north, at the moment you were born. Add your birth date and the calculator shows its sign and a short meaning. Your South Node is always in the opposite sign. Almost every birthday works without a birth time.

How to use it

  1. Enter the birthday. Month, day and year are all the North Node sign needs. It changes signs about every year and a half, so the exact hour rarely matters.
  2. Select your birthplace. Choose the town from the suggestions so the calendar day is read in the right time zone; this matters on the day a sign changes.
  3. Read the sign and its opposite. The North Node sign appears with a short meaning. Your South Node is the sign directly opposite it on the wheel.

Your North Node sign depends mostly on the year, and sometimes the month, of your birth, because the node needs about a year and a half to cross each sign. Enter your birth date above. Your South Node is the sign opposite the one you get.

What the North Node is

The North Node is a point, not a planet. It marks where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path heading north. Modern astrologers read it as the direction you are being invited to grow toward, usually in areas that feel unfamiliar or awkward at first. Older writers called it the Dragon's Head and treated it as a helpful point that speeds things along. Both readings are in use, so a good calculator should say which one it follows.

The South Node sits exactly opposite. Modern astrologers read it as the habits, talents and comfort zones you already know well, which can be a real strength but can also keep you from growing if you lean on them too much. Older writers called it the Dragon's Tail. If your North Node is in Scorpio, your South Node is in Taurus, and the two are always paired in this way.

Which North Node this calculator uses

There are two versions of the node. The mean node moves smoothly. The true node wobbles around it, because it follows the Moon's actual path. This calculator shows the true North Node. The two can differ by a degree or two, so a mean-node chart on another site may place yours in a neighbouring sign if you were born very close to a border.

The true node also explains something odd in the tables. On a few occasions it crosses into a new sign, slips back, and crosses again. Counting at noon UTC, it entered Leo on 6 January 1980, was back in Virgo on the 7th, and settled in Leo on the 13th. For a birthday inside a window like that, the date alone is not enough, and the exact time is needed.

Why the node changes sign so rarely

The node travels backward through the zodiac and takes about 18.6 years to complete a circuit. It spends between about 1.4 and 1.7 years in each sign, so a birth date almost never needs a birth time. Everyone born within the same year or so shares a North Node sign. That is also why it describes a theme of your generation as well as of you; the house it sits in, which needs a birth time, is what makes it personal.

The table lists the day each sign began, counted in UTC. The local day can differ by one, so if you were born within a day of a date in the table, enter your details above and read the result there.

Two examples

Elena's birthday is 15 May 1994. The table puts the North Node in Scorpio from 1 February 1994, so her North Node is Scorpio and her South Node is Taurus. Maya's is 3 November 1985. Her North Node is in Taurus and her South Node in Scorpio, the mirror image of Elena's.

Using this page as a south node calculator

There is no separate tool to run, because the two nodes always come as a pair. Enter your birthday and birthplace above, and the result card names your North Node first and your South Node straight under it. The table above has the same pairs, so a North Node in Pisces always means a South Node in Virgo.

The South Node is read as what you already do well without effort: old habits, talents and comfort zones. That can be a real strength, and it can also keep you from growing if you lean on it too much. Older writers called it the Dragon's Tail. With a birth time, your full chart places the North Node in a house, and the South Node belongs to the opposite house.

How to read your result

Read the North Node sentence as a question about growth rather than a prediction. Ask what feels new or slightly uncomfortable in the area it describes, and whether you avoid it because it is unfamiliar. Then read the South Node sentence for the opposite: what you can already do without effort and might lean on too much. Neither point is a verdict. They are two ends of one axis, and astrologers read them together.

With a birth time, your full chart also puts the North Node in a house, and that house names the part of life where the axis tends to show up: home, work, friends or partnerships. Start with the birth chart calculator for that. The Venus sign calculator and the Chiron calculator are the other slow-moving placements worth reading next, and the how we calculate page covers how the nodes are found.

Common questions

How do I figure out my North Node?

Enter the birthday and town in the box at the top and the North Node sign comes back with a short meaning. For your South Node, take the sign directly opposite, such as Taurus for a Scorpio North Node.

Where is my North Node right now?

The North Node moves backward through the zodiac and is in Aquarius as of November 2026, having entered on 27 July 2026. It moves on to Capricorn on 26 March 2028. Those dates are in UTC, and they can differ by a day from the date where you live.

Do I need my birth time for the North Node?

Usually not. The node stays in a sign for about a year and a half, so the date is enough. A time is only needed if you were born within a day or so of the node changing signs, or to learn the house.

Why is the South Node always opposite the North Node?

The two nodes are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path, and those points are always exactly 180 degrees apart. That is why they sit in opposite signs.

Is the North Node a planet?

No. It is a calculated point in space, not a body you could see through a telescope. Astrologers include it in the chart because it marks where the paths of the Sun and Moon cross.

Why might another site give a different North Node?

Some sites use the mean node, which moves smoothly, while this calculator uses the true node. The two can differ by a degree or two, so only birthdays very close to a sign border give different signs.

What does the North Node mean?

Modern astrologers read it as the direction you are invited to grow toward, often in areas that feel unfamiliar at first. It is read together with the South Node, which stands for what you already know well.

Is there a South Node calculator?

This calculator does both. Enter your birth date and place, and the card shows your North Node and then your South Node, which is always in the opposite sign. If your South Node is in Libra, for example, your North Node is in Aries.
