Can I Find My Rising Sign Without a Birth Time?
No, not as a single answer. Your rising sign moves on about every two hours, so a full day runs through all twelve signs. What you can do here is enter your birth date and place and see which sign rises during each part of that day. If you know roughly when you were born, such as the morning or afternoon, that narrows it a lot.
How to use it
- Tick the no-time box. Under the time boxes, tick “I don't know my birth time”. Your Sun and Moon signs will still appear, with both listed if the Moon changed signs.
- Add your date and place. The windows depend on both. The same date gives a different list in a different city, and a different list in another season.
- Match the list to what you know. Press the button and read the time windows with their signs. Pick the ones that fit anything you remember, such as morning, after lunch or late at night.
Without a birth time you cannot get one exact rising sign, because the horizon moves through all twelve signs each day. You can see which sign rises in each stretch of your birth date, then narrow it with whatever you know, such as morning or afternoon.
The honest answer
No calculator can give you a single rising sign without a birth time. The rising sign is whatever sign is on the eastern horizon, and over one day all twelve signs rise in turn. Any tool that returns one sign for a date and place alone is guessing, usually by assuming noon or sunrise. What can be done is to show which sign belongs to each part of the day. Then whatever you know about when you were born, even something vague, cuts the twelve down.
What this page gives you
Tick the box that says you do not know your birth time, add your date and place, and the form returns:
- Your Sun sign, and your Moon sign, which do not need the hour, apart from the days the Moon changes signs, when you see both.
- The rising sign for each stretch of your birth date, in the local time of your birthplace.
You will not get houses, a chart wheel or a Midheaven. Those depend on the exact hour as well.
A real day, hour by hour
Here is 15 May 1994 in New York, taken from the same list the form produces:
| Born between | Rising sign |
|---|---|
| 12:00 am to 12:48 am | Capricorn |
| 12:48 am to 2:14 am | Aquarius |
| 2:14 am to 3:25 am | Pisces |
| 3:25 am to 4:37 am | Aries |
| 4:37 am to 6:03 am | Taurus |
| 6:03 am to 7:57 am | Gemini |
| 7:57 am to 10:19 am | Cancer |
| 10:19 am to 12:52 pm | Leo |
| 12:52 pm to 3:23 pm | Virgo |
| 3:23 pm to 5:55 pm | Libra |
| 5:55 pm to 8:27 pm | Scorpio |
| 8:27 pm to 10:50 pm | Sagittarius |
| 10:50 pm to 12:00 am | Capricorn |
Notice that the stretches are unequal. Aries held the horizon for 72 minutes in the early morning, while Cancer and Leo each lasted more than two hours. The table for 21 December 1994 in New York is a different list: it begins with Libra at midnight, and Sagittarius is rising around dawn. The season changes both which sign rises when and how long each lasts, so a table for one date cannot be reused for another.
How to narrow it down with what you know
Match what you know to the windows on your own table.
- Morning, afternoon or night. If you were told you arrived in the morning, take the signs between midnight and noon in your table. In the New York example that is eight signs, ending with Leo. A birth after lunch leaves Virgo and Libra, with Scorpio only after 5:55 pm.
- Around sunrise. At sunrise the Sun is on the eastern horizon, so your rising sign is your Sun sign. At dawn on 15 May 1994 in New York, that is Taurus.
- A nearby clue. A parent may recall that it was before the evening news, or that the nurse changed shift. Match that to the closest hour, then see which two signs it falls between.
- A record. Some hospitals and civil registries keep the time of birth even if your certificate does not show it. Ask the office that issued your certificate for the long form, or ask the hospital for a copy of the delivery record.
Choosing between the signs that remain
Once you have two or three candidates, read the one-line description of each and see which one fits how other people describe you, not how you describe yourself. Be honest that this is a judgement and not a calculation. Astrologers also try to work backward from life events, a method called rectification, and it gives an estimate that depends on the astrologer. It is not done here.
Maya, for example, knows only that she was born "after lunch" on 15 May 1994 in New York. That leaves Virgo until 3:23 pm and Libra from then until 5:55 pm, so she has two candidates and the line between them falls at 3:23. If a hospital record turns up later, she enters the time and gets one answer, and nothing she has read has to be redone.
When you find the time
Add it to the same form and you get a single rising sign, with its degree, plus the houses and the wheel in your full chart. The rising sign calculator explains how hour and place work together, and the Big 3 guide shows how to read the result next to your Sun and Moon signs. The method for the table is on the how we calculate page.
Common questions
Can you find your rising sign without a birth time?
Not as one answer. The rising sign moves on about every two hours, so the hour is essential. You can see the sign for each stretch of your birth date, and use anything you know about the time of day to narrow it down.
How do I find my rising sign if I do not know my birth time?
Tick the no-time box in the form above and add your date and place. You get a table of the rising sign for each time of day, in local time. Match it to what you know about when you were born.
How accurate is a rising sign estimate?
The table itself is exact for your date and place. The estimate is only as good as what you know about the hour. Knowing morning or afternoon removes several signs, and a record of the time gives one sign.
What if I only know I was born in the morning?
Take the windows on your table that fall before noon. For a morning after sunrise that is typically three or four signs. Add anything else you know, such as before or after breakfast, to narrow it further.
How can I find out my birth time?
Ask the office that issued your birth certificate for the long form, or ask the hospital for a copy of its delivery record. Parents, baby books and old family papers sometimes record the hour too.
Do I get my Sun and Moon signs without the time?
Yes. The Sun sign needs only the date. The Moon sign needs only the date too, apart from the days it changes signs, when you see both signs listed in order.
Can I just use my sun sign as my rising sign?
Only if you were born around sunrise, when the Sun is on the eastern horizon. At other hours your rising sign is usually a different sign, and it can be any of the twelve.
